Reading Like A Writer

Description

Explore the craft of writing through structured reading groups led by Berlin Writers’ Workshop faculty. In each Read Like A Writer course, we’ll turn our attention to a book of interest—sometimes classic, sometimes contemporary—or a series of works, reading and discussing together with an eye toward deepening our appreciation of the art of writing. We will approach these books from the perspective of practicing writers, setting out not only to analyze their salient qualities and techniques but to draw inspiration from them for our own projects and experiments.

Readings groups are designed with readers and writers of all experiences levels in mind. Whether you recently completed a draft of a novel or just want to connect with other writers and bibliophiles, you are welcome in this class.

This class is taught in English.

Next Session: Reading Ali Smith with Evan James

In this Read Like a Writer group, we’ll read Ali Smith’s playful and innovative Artful, a book that began its life as four lectures delivered by Smith at Oxford and that blends essay and fiction in formally daring ways. We will discuss one “lecture” (40-50 pages) per week, exploring the methods, techniques, and inspirations Smith employs to bring this singular celebration of literature and the imagination to life. (Note: participants should acquire their own copy of the text, and they should read the first section, “On time,” in preparation for our first session.)

Best in the business...

“The instructors at the Berlin Writers' Workshop are among the best in the business: brilliant writers, thorough editors, thoughtful teachers, and insightful critics. That all this literary talent has descended on Berlin is tremendously exciting.”

— Carmen Maria Machado, author, Her Body and Other Parties

Extraordinary...

"As a writer and editor, Rebecca has an extraordinary aptitude for understanding work in its big silhouettes and in its finer textures. She’s clear-eyed and curious and deliberate. She offers serious attention to others’ pages. I’ve been so grateful to have her as a reader and literary confidante."

— Amanda Goldblatt, writer and teacher

Enormously helpful...

"Whether offering me practical guidance about how to restructure a story, recommending a book or essay that I might find useful, or simply encouraging me to keep going, their intelligence and mentorship have helped me and my writing enormously."
