Description

Poetry II is an advanced poetry workshop aimed at students with some previous experience in a literature course, either through a workshop with the Berlin Writers’ Workshop, or anywhere elsewhere, though anyone is welcome to enroll. This class will dive deeper into poetic craft through readings and discussions of texts, with a special focus on how poems cohere into a larger body of work. In addition to poetry, we will also read excerpts of nonfiction texts and essays. Participants will receive writing prompts to generate new work, and each student will have the opportunity to workshop 2-3 pages of poems.

Upcoming Session: A Book With A Hole In It
June 3rd-July 8th 2024

In this upcoming course, we will focus our attention on a single, contemporary book of poetry by Kamelya Omayma Youssef, reading alongside it related texts from Etel Adnan, Simone Weil, Robert Hayden, Walter Benjamin, Suheir Hammad, Marwa Halal and Jalal Toufic. Through a close reading of the text along with its notes and acknowledgements, we will build a deeper understanding of books as works in constellation and conversation with other writers and thinkers. We will also discuss writing as a daily practice and poetry as a mode as well as journaling as a generative form.

This class will run 6 weeks for a total of 15 class hours. The class is limited to ten students, and is taught in English.

Best in the business...

“The instructors at the Berlin Writers' Workshop are among the best in the business: brilliant writers, thorough editors, thoughtful teachers, and insightful critics. That all this literary talent has descended on Berlin is tremendously exciting.”

— Carmen Maria Machado, author, Her Body and Other Parties

Extraordinary...

"As a writer and editor, Rebecca has an extraordinary aptitude for understanding work in its big silhouettes and in its finer textures. She’s clear-eyed and curious and deliberate. She offers serious attention to others’ pages. I’ve been so grateful to have her as a reader and literary confidante."

— Amanda Goldblatt, writer and teacher

Enormously helpful...

"Whether offering me practical guidance about how to restructure a story, recommending a book or essay that I might find useful, or simply encouraging me to keep going, their intelligence and mentorship have helped me and my writing enormously."
