The Critic as Artist / The Artist as Critic: An Art Writing Workshop

“I would call criticism a creation within a creation.”
Oscar Wilde

In this workshop we will explore the art of writing about art. We’ll proceed with a dose of lightness and experimentation, allowing our writing the same playfulness we permit ourselves when working in visual forms.

Over two days of exercises, readings, and discussion, we will treat critical writing in all its forms, from “serious” reviews to poetry, art writing, flash stories and non-fiction fiction. When we change the form or genre of our writing, does the content follow suit?

Students will leave class with ideas for investigating and developing their own style. “Your style is you,” Truman Capote says. But how can we tease out a personal voice from all of the “other stuff” around the object of our attention—a work’s value, press text, the canon?

The workshop is designed for anyone who enjoys art or writing. No prior experience necessary.
