Description

Whether you’re an experienced writer looking to refresh your process or an absolute beginner keen to get some words down on the page, this class will help you generate brand-new material over the course of several days as you experiment with prose techniques and build some momentum in your writing practice. The course will meet for a total of 10 hours -- 2.5 hours a day over 4 consecutive days.

During each class meeting, we’ll touch on different aspects of prose craft: point of view and narrative distance, character, dialogue, conflict, structure, "narrative questions," and more. We’ll look to writers who do these things exceptionally well, examining their work for inspiration. Fired up by what we’ve learned, we’ll turn to in-class writing exercises, shaking up our creative practice and generating new material that lays the groundwork for further exploration and development.

This class is open to writers at all levels of experience and is taught in English.

Extraordinary...

"As a writer and editor, Rebecca has an extraordinary aptitude for understanding work in its big silhouettes and in its finer textures. She’s clear-eyed and curious and deliberate. She offers serious attention to others’ pages. I’ve been so grateful to have her as a reader and literary confidante."

— Amanda Goldblatt, writer and teacher

Enormously helpful...

"Whether offering me practical guidance about how to restructure a story, recommending a book or essay that I might find useful, or simply encouraging me to keep going, their intelligence and mentorship have helped me and my writing enormously."
