Description

The core of the Berlin Writers' Workshop, Creative Writing I is open to all writers regardless of experience or background. Through a combination of readings, craft lessons, and weekly discussions, we'll cover the basic elements of fiction and nonfiction: point of view, characterization, setting, scene and summary, and style. We'll share and discuss our favorite books and learn generative exercises to help inspire new work. We'll also workshop each other’s manuscripts and discuss strategies for revision and editing.

Creative Writing I is designed to benefit both beginning and advanced writers. Whether you recently completed a draft of a novel or just want to connect with other writers and bibliophiles, you are welcome in this class.

This class is taught in English.

Best in the business...

“The instructors at the Berlin Writers' Workshop are among the best in the business: brilliant writers, thorough editors, thoughtful teachers, and insightful critics. That all this literary talent has descended on Berlin is tremendously exciting.”

— Carmen Maria Machado, author, Her Body and Other Parties

Extraordinary...

"As a writer and editor, Rebecca has an extraordinary aptitude for understanding work in its big silhouettes and in its finer textures. She’s clear-eyed and curious and deliberate. She offers serious attention to others’ pages. I’ve been so grateful to have her as a reader and literary confidante."

— Amanda Goldblatt, writer and teacher

Enormously helpful...

"Whether offering me practical guidance about how to restructure a story, recommending a book or essay that I might find useful, or simply encouraging me to keep going, their intelligence and mentorship have helped me and my writing enormously."

— Ariel Lewiton, Director of Marketing and Publicity, Sarabande Books
